The Senate needs to ask pork producers to screen pork for Covid-19

From an article by Rhian Hunt:

Sen. Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, sent a letter to each of the four companies, stating the meat-packers exported a combined 1.3 billion pounds of pork and beef starting from March 20 into June. Addressing the leading executives of the companies, the senators questioned "your honesty with the American public about the reasons for higher food prices, and your commitment to providing a safe, affordable, and abundant food supply for the nation."

Hypothesising on the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 through bats: Its relation to intensive pig-factory farming and the agro-industrial complex

"The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and the resulting disease, COVID-19, is possibly related to bats, which have been shown to be a reservoir for many kinds of viruses, including coronaviridae, due to their physiological peculiarities. However, it remains controversial how, if at all, the virus evolved from bats to become infectious to humans, turning the resulting disease into a pandemic. The current discussion is based on some facts around the agro-industrial complex, such as intensive pigfactory farming in the city of Wuhan and its surroundings. A putative triangular relationship between bats, pigs and humans is described as a striking fictional story first, serving to illustrate the hypothesis. Then the history of current globalised animal farming from its beginnings during the 'Green Revolution' and its detrimental impacts are summarised. With COVID-19 research in its infancy, this is followed by mappings of pigfactory farming in the state of Santa Catarina, in the south region of Brazil and outbreaks of COVID-19 in humans."

Researchers warn farmed wildlife such as pigs, minks, bats and rodents, could act as “reservoir species” for the Covid-19 virus

Scientists call for Covid-19 links between pets and humans to be further probed

"A team of British scientists has called for more research into the animals susceptible to Covid-19, including pet cats and dogs, for fear they could re-infect human populations who have fought to control the disease. Researchers from University College London say if the Covid-19 virus becomes common in animals in close proximity to humans – such as pets or livestock – outbreaks could occur even if the coronavirus has been eradicated from in people in the area. In a comment article in The Lancet Microbe, the scientists have called for more research into which animals are susceptible to the virus causing Covid-19, and for regular testing to then be carried out on the species posing the highest risk of transmitting the disease to people."

Pork producers may be forced to test pork for Covid-19

Food exporters to China asked to declare produce and pork are coronavirus-free

"China’s customs authority has asked food exporters to the country to sign a declaration their produce is not contaminated by the novel coronavirus, three people who received a letter said on Friday. The declaration, seen by Reuters, may be an effort by China to reduce the additional testing it has carried out on imported foods over the last week and make exporters responsible for guaranteeing their products’ safety, one meat importer who had signed it said. He declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue. The French pork industry association Inaporc also received the notice, an official said."

Are Animals a Neglected Transmission Route of SARS-CoV-2?

"While ACE2 receptor amino acid sequences in different animals show phylogenetic distance with respect to the human ACE2 receptor, the pangolin, cat, feline, and dog ACE2 receptor sequences cluster closely (Figure 1), and it predicts that the S protein of SARS-CoV-2 may bind to ACE2 in domestic cats and dogs, as well as a range of other species, including pigs, cows, pangolins, and Chinese hamsters"

"ADE modulates the immune response and can trigger violent immune reactions such as the cytokine storm, directly related to severe COVID-19 cases and deaths [7]. This phenomenon requires prior exposure to similar antigenic epitopes, and some animal species, such as dogs, pigs, and bovines, are often infected by taxonomically related coronaviruses [9,10]. Consequently, past interrelation with animals previously infected with animal coronaviruses might have primed the human immune system against them and, in turn, conferred a partial protection against the circulating SARS-CoV-2 [8,9,10], this being a possible explanation for the observed geographic limitation of severe cases and deaths."

Chinese scientists warn that pigs should be kept under surveillance for the possibility of becoming intermediate hosts of Covid-19

Single-cell screening of SARS-CoV-2 target cells in pets, livestock, poultry and wildlife

Abstract:

A few animals have been suspected to be intermediate hosts of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, a large-scale single-cell screening of SARS-CoV-2 target cells on a wide variety of animals is missing. Here, we constructed the single-cell atlas for 11 representative species in pets, livestock, poultry, and wildlife. Notably, the proportion of SARS-CoV-2 target cells in cat was found considerably higher than other species we investigated and SARS-CoV-2 target cells were detected in multiple cell types of domestic pig, implying the necessity to carefully evaluate the risk of cats during the current COVID-19 pandemic and keep pigs under surveillance for the possibility of becoming intermediate hosts in future coronavirus outbreak.

"Theoretically, if pigs can be infected with SARC‐CoV‐2 and also amplify it, the virus would likely be present in the respiratory tract of pigs so lungs or nasal swabs would need to be tested"

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) outbreak: Could pigs be vectors for human infections?
Based on today's knowledge, the risk of acquiring a SARS‐CoV‐2 infection while undergoing a transplantation procedure using porcine‐derived materials should be considered low but likely needs to be properly assessed. Until this is the case, donor pigs can simply be tested by PCR for the presence of SARS‐CoV‐2 viral RNA or once available by serology for antibodies to further rule out any infection. This practice is currently already in place for human blood donors in Wuhan and Hubei Province in China. 30
In summary, SARS‐CoV‐2 is emerging and spreading at a high rate in the human population. Due to the large number of infected people often with high virus loads, SARS‐CoV‐2 could potentially spill over in other species including pigs and this should be monitored closely. Evidence from SARS‐CoV would suggest that it is likely to detect SARS‐CoV‐2 RNA in pigs but perhaps unlikely that the virus would be amplified in pigs.

Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder raises issue of meat-packing connection to Covid-19

Marc Bekoff:

"Also, consider the situation now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, of what's happening to numerous humans working in meat-packing slaughterhouses in which animals butchered after living horrific lives on the way to their deaths. There have been a number of COVID-19 cases because of the horrific unsanitary working conditions in these hellholes. And it's possible intensively farmed and severely abused pigs may play a role in spreading COVID-19."

Scientists warn that HHV-6 reactivation may be an issue in Covid-19

The Clinics of HHV-6 Infection in COVID-19 Pandemic: Pityriasis Rosea and Kawasaki Disease

Abstract

A new type of coronavirus family (SARS-CoV-2), which can be found in humans and animals, with many varieties and clinical symptoms, was first seen in Wuhan, China in late 2019, under the name novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). In the literature, cutaneous symptoms related to the disease are generally emphasized. However, it is not yet known whether this new SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has entered our lives, plays a role in the etiopathogenesis of dermatological diseases. The patients who were admitted to the dermatology outpatient clinic between 1 April and May 15, 2019, and on 1 April and May 15, 2020 were retrospectively analyzed by searching the hospital automation system and patient files. The reason for the same months to be included in the study was to exclude seasonal effects on the diseases. After pandemic, the number of patients with Pityriasis rosea and Kawasaki disease increased significantly in patients who applied to the dermatology outpatient clinic. Our study is the first study showing pityriasis rosea increase during the pandemic period. We think that this increase is related to HHV-6 reactivation. Herein, we wanted to draw attention to two diseases in which Human Herpes 6 (HHV-6) was accused in etiopathogenesis: Kawasaki disease and Pityriasis rosea
